A rare sighting of a Burrowing Owl was recently reported in the Charlotte (NC) Observer.  Taylor Piephoff, a “naturalist with an interest in the birds and wildlife of the southern Piedmont, wrote about the Burrowing Owl spotted at Wrightsville Beach.

Taylor reports that the last Burrowing Owl seen in North Carolina was  44 years ago,   I checked on eBird, and a Burrowing Owl was recorded in 2005 in the Asheville area.

Rare burrowing owl sighting is a real hoot

Nate Swick from North Carolina posted a photo of the Wrightsville Beach Burrowing Owl on his blog 10,000 birds.  The  bird is barely recognizable through a spotting scope across an inlet.

Eat your heart out North Carolina, the Cape Coral Burrowing Owls can be photographed with a cell phone! Apparently some closer photographs were obtained by people using boats.  From the photo’s it looks to be an owl of the Florida species.
