Below are a few books and a movie that I would highly recommend if you are coming to Cape Coral to see the owls and plan on spending some time in Southwest Florida.
Hoot by Carl Hiaasen was actually written about the Cape Coral Burrowing Owls.
This is a great book for teens and pre-teens. (I know quite a few adults who have watched it too. Good clean fun!)
Hoot the Movie. Hoot the book was made into a movie with Jimmy Buffett in a starring role.
The Living Gulf Coast: A Nature Guide to Southwest Florida by Charles Sobczak
If you are looking for places to go and things to see in SW Florida, this is the book for you. It covers all the nature related places to visit. A great book for planning your vacation here.
Stokes Field Guides
Lillian and Don Stokes are avid birders and Lilian is a photographer extraordinaire. They have written many field guides, but their latest are worthy purchases. The Stokes Field Guide to Birds of North America, has over 3000 photos, most of which were taken by Lillian herself. The book is much to big to carry in the field, so they broke the book into eastern birds and western birds, making it much more manageable. I have had the honor of meeting Lillian and Don as they winter on Sanibel Island (FL). They are frequent visitors to Ding Darling National Wildlife Refuge and the Sanibel lighthouse, great birding hotspots on the Island, and love to teach. I never knew there was so much to know about telling the differences between juvenile Yellow-crowned Night Herons and juvenile Black-crowned Night Herons.
